Lake Anna sits right in the heart of Central Virginia and makes the perfect destination whether you come for a quick day trip, a weekend escape, or a new lakefront home. The lake is an easy drive from four nearby cities and towns: Richmond, Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, and Culpeper. No matter which direction you travel, the routes are straightforward and scenic, with plenty of charming stops along the way to make your arrival even more enjoyable.
Our team created this simple guide to help visitors and homeowners plan their trip. We also included a few favorite local spots to visit as you get close so your drive becomes part of the fun. Coming from Fredericksburg The drive takes about 45 minutes. Head west on Route 208 or take Interstate 95 south to Exit 118 and follow the signs toward the lake. This route brings you through peaceful countryside and puts you near the eastern and southern shores.
As you get close, plan a quick stop in the Spotsylvania area. Log Home Brewing Company (our favorite!) offers craft beer, tasty food, and a laid back atmosphere perfect for unwinding before you hit the water. Just a short drive away sits Lake Anna Winery, where you can enjoy a tasting among the vineyards and soak in the relaxed lake life vibe. Both spots are ideal for stretching your legs and grabbing a bite or a drink.
Coming from Richmond Expect a drive of about one hour. Take Interstate 64 west then connect to Route 522 north, or follow local roads through Louisa County for a more scenic option. Either way, you will enjoy rolling hills and open fields as you approach the southern part of the lake.
This direction lines up well with the same Spotsylvania area stops mentioned above. Many travelers from Richmond also swing by the public beach area or Lake Anna State Park, Everleigh Vineyards and Brewhouse or Fifty Third Winery, once they arrive for a quick preparation for a great time before heading to their rental or home.
Coming from Charlottesville The trip takes about one hour and 45 to 55 minutes. Drive east on Route 208 or combine Interstate 64 east with Route 522 north. The route winds through beautiful rural Virginia and brings you right to the western and central parts of the lake.
As you near Lake Anna, consider pulling into the Food Lion or one of the nearby spots shown on our map for any last minute supplies. Many visitors from this direction also stop at the public beach area or head straight to the state park for a first look at the clear waters and sandy shores. Prospect Brewhouse is right across the street from Food Lion and is a popular hot spot for locals.
Coming from Culpeper This is one of the quickest drives at about 50 minutes. Take US 522 south, which leads you directly toward the northern shores of the lake. The road is straightforward and offers lovely views of the Virginia countryside the whole way.
When you get close, make sure to stop at The Boardwalk in Mineral. Tim’s Restaurant at Lake Anna serves up waterfront dining with great views, while Moo Thru Ice Cream delivers homemade treats that families love or The Cove Restaurant just down the road. The Boardwalk area is a fun hub with mini golf, shops, and easy access to the water, making it the perfect last stop before you reach your destination.
